The Turrbal clan were the first Aboriginal clan to live in the area which is now the suburb of Ashgrove. Each Aboriginal clan was allotted a certain area. The Turrbal clan occupied the land named Yorks Hollow that extended from the northern side of the Brisbane River to Logan. The Turrbal clan were also known as the Duke of Yorks. Day to day life for the clan included hunting which was mostly fishing and gathering food. This meant that the clan mostly ate fish. The Turrbal people had gatherings where all of the other tribes from southeast Queensland would come to witness a corroboree. This was important to the tribe because it was considered sacred. Even though there are only a few Turrbal people still around, the clan remains important to the history of Ashgrove.
