The Ashgrovian House

The Queenslander was a style of house built throughout Queensland between 1940 and 1960. A variation of this style of architecture was commonly built in the suburb of Ashgrove.  Queenslanders built in Ashgrove are given the name “Ashgrovian”. They were mainly made of wood with a tin roof. The houses had large verandas, double doors and gabled roofs. Like all Queenslanders, Ashgrovians were normally built raised well above the ground on timber stilts. This was done to lift the house to provide protection from flood waters, to assist with ventilation and also to keep pests out. Ashgrovian houses were built with wood because it was a material that is readily available and it also helps to increase the flow of air in the house for cooling. Additionally, ventilation was assisted by large doors and windows that were lined up internally to increase air flow through the house. Ashgrovians were often painted a mild pastel colour. The Ashgrovian house has and always will be a significant part of Ashgrove’s history.

Glen Lyon House

Glen Lyon House was built between 1876 and 1877 in the Enoggera Creek area. It was built by Melanesian labourers for Alexander Stewart. Glen Lyon house is one of the oldest residences in Ashgrove. It is a large brick two storeyed house that is rendered to resemble an ashlar.  After Alexander Stewart died TM Burke bought the house that was then rented to the Marist Fathers in 1927 who then purchased it in 1930. Glen Lyon House had a great importance and significance because of the effect it  had on the development of Ashgrove, particularly in West Ashgrove. It illustrates the establishment of grand houses in rural estates in Brisbane between 1860 and 1870. Preserving historical buildings is important because of the cultural significance it has to a community. A building can show social events and mainly the history of the community.

Turrbal Clan

The Turrbal clan were the first Aboriginal clan to live in the area which is now the suburb of Ashgrove.  Each Aboriginal clan was allotted a certain area.  The Turrbal clan occupied the land named Yorks Hollow that extended from the northern side of the Brisbane River to Logan. The Turrbal clan were also known as the Duke of Yorks. Day to day life for the clan included hunting which was mostly fishing and gathering food. This meant that the clan mostly ate fish. The Turrbal people had gatherings where all of the other tribes from southeast Queensland would come to witness a corroboree. This was important to the tribe because it was considered sacred. Even though there are only a few Turrbal people still around, the clan remains important to the history of Ashgrove.

Aidan's Mt St Michaels Experience

Introduction to My Mt St Michaels Collage Experience 2011

My First Impression
I remember thinking how big the school was and wondering how I would learn to get around. Everything was so different at high school, like having different teachers and a locker, there is also a lot of work so I was a little bit scared and nervous. I also remember the guard of honour the grade 12 gave the grade 8 which I thought was really nice and it made me feel like I belonged.

My Greatest Challenge
I think my greatest challenge so far would have to be remembering to pack my books in the afternoon, getting done all of the homework for my classes the next day and putting it back in my school bag.

My Favourite Thing about High School
My favourite thing about high school is that I can do a different elective each term. I also like electives because I can choose what I want to do.
